IP sites on an RF system
How to integrate IP sites to an existing Analog Radio System.
A county needed to add generator monitoring sites to an existing system. The existing sites communicated on an analog radio system while the new sites were only accessible via the county LAN. The county IT department required report by exception protocols be used to limit bandwidth so a direct connection protocol such as Modbus could not be used. The county also wanted the ability to change existing radio based sites to IP based sites at a future date.
The county had an ACE3680 Field Interface Unit which was communicating to Wonderware's InTouch via Modbus over IP and communicating to remote RTUs via analog radios. One of the IP ports on the FIU was configured to share Modbus IP traffic and MDLC IP. A Wonderware InTouch System Manager screen was added to allow for dynamic selection on a per site basis of which link, radio or IP the site used to communicate with.
