IV&D Radio Upgrade

Migrating a radio system from analog to IV&D in phases.

The Challenge

A municipality was having its analog radio system upgraded to Motorola's IV&D digital system.  The municipality had over 100 RTUs in the field and couldn't perform the required upgrade to each site in one day.  They needed to phase in the RTUs on the new IV&D system while keeping connectivity to the RTUs still running on the analog system.

The Solution

The FIU was reconfigured to support 2 radios, the existing analog radio and the new digital radio via an RS232 interface.  Existing analog sites reported into the FIU via the analog radio port while the new digital sites reported to the FIU via the digital radio port.  In addition to the configuration change, a temporary power supply was added to power the new digital radio.  Lastly a modification to the InTouch System Manager screen was created to allow an operator to change an existing site from Analog to Digital at any time without any assistance or further support.  Once all 122 sites were upgraded to digital radios, the analog radio was disconnected from the FIU and the temporary power supply was removed.
